Researchers Create Nose-Only COVID-19 Masks to Wear While Eating

Researchers in Mexico have designed a COVID-19 mask for people to wear only over their noses while they eat, according to a report Wednesday.

The nose masks to be worn under a full mask with similar behind-the-ears straps were unveiled in a demonstration video, according to Reuters.

In the video, a man and woman sit down for lunch at an outdoor table and take off their normal masks to reveal their nose-only gear before eating.

The creators of the design say that removing a mask to eat or drink increases the risk of exposure to the virus, and the nose-only mask does not eliminate all risks of spreading infection.

News of the mask created mixed reactions. Some Twitter users said that it would “reduce transmission,” while others poked fun at its unusual look.

“Hardly a new invention, clowns have been wearing them for years,” one user posted along with a photo of  a bright red clown nose.
