Black Driver Charged with Fatally Running Over White BLM Protester in Seattle

In Seattle, the driver who drove through a Black Lives Matter protest on a freeway and hit two protesters now faces charges including vehicular homicide, as reported by ABC News.

On Saturday evening, 27-year-old Dawit Kelete, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the northeast African country of Eritrea, was driving on Interstate 5 when he came upon the Black Lives Matter protest, where protesters and a parked van were blocking traffic. Kelete swerved around the van to avoid hitting it, only to end up driving directly into the crowd.

In a video that has since gone viral, Kelete’s white Jaguar can be seen striking two protesters, sending them flying into the air, before he drives away. The two protesters were 24-year-old Summer Taylor, a White woman who believed she was “non-binary,” and 32-year-old Diaz Love; Taylor died of her injuries at the hospital, while Love remains in serious condition.

Once police eventually found Kelete, they determined that he was not under the influence of alcohol or any drugs. His lawyer has since said that Kelete was “remorseful” over the news that someone had died.

On Wednesday, Kelete was charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and reckless driving. After appearing in court on Monday, the judge set Kelete’s bail at a staggering $1.2 million.
