The Hill reports, Amazon bought the naming rights to Seattle’s Key Arena which will now be known as the “Climate Pledge Arena.” The arena will be home to an unnamed NHL team planning to join the league for the upcoming season.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, announced the change in an Instagram post on Thursday, saying its name was chosen “as a regular reminder of the urgent need for climate action.”
“It will be the first net zero carbon certified arena in the world, generate zero waste from operations and events, and use reclaimed rainwater in the ice system to create the greenest ice in the NHL,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wrote in the Instagram post.
Tod Leiweike, CEO of NHL Seattle, told The Seattle Times,“I never dreamed that we would have this type of platform.”
Bezos announced a $2 billion initiative last year, which sets goals for Amazon to become net carbon neutral by 2040.
