Morning Greatness: Cops Overcharged in Rayshard Brooks Shooting

Good Thursday morning.

Here is what’s on the president’s agenda today:

  • The president announces the PREVENTS Task Force Roadmap
  • 1:00PM Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany holds a briefing

Officers sentenced in Rayshard Brooks shooting

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard held a big, fat showboating press conference yesterday, putting on a mini-trial for the media and the voters, announcing charges for the officers involved in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks.

Former police officer Garrett Rolfe was charged with 11 counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Outrageous. If you watch the video, what you see is a perfectly polite and calm exchange, Brooks resisting arrest, putting up a serious fight, attacking the two police officers in the fight, grabbing an officer’s taser, pointing it and trying to use it before he was shot and killed. Was Rolfe threatened by these actions? I would say so. Why did Brooks resist arrest? That’s a provocative move and a physical one. It’s Brooks that escalated the situation, if he had just not resisted arrest he would still be alive. We need a national conversation on not resisting arrest. Police officers are ARMED, what are the possible outcomes when you attack someone who is armed? The objects of aggression have to assume you will try and grab their weapon and use it against them, that is a fact. All of this Monday morning quarter backing from folks who have never been in a heated, life threatening situation is meaningless. The peanut gallery “analysts” simply don’t know what they are talking about. I am including idiots who say officers or anyone defending their life with a firearm should “aim for the leg” GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT CRAP. If your life is in danger or your safety has been physically violated, you shoot to neutralize the threat. The burden isn’t on the victim, the social contract has already been breached by the aggressor’s attack. So much stupid out there. If you want to minimize the risk of getting shot, don’t attack someone with a gun.

I think the D.A. has overcharged the officers and they will probably be acquitted whereupon we will get some more riots.

Republican release police reform bill

On Wednesday, the Republicans revealed a bill with much promised police reforms “including new accountability, training and deescalation measures, including incentives to limit controversial tactics like chokeholds.” Senator Tim Scott (R- South Carolina) introduced the bill and ABC News wants you to know that Scott is the “lone” African American Republican senator. The Democrats have two African American senators, in case you are a big bean counter on these issues like ABC News is.

“Too often we’re having a discussion in this nation: Are you supporting law enforcement or communities of color? This is a false binary choice. The answer to the question is, ‘I support America. You support America. It is not a binary choice. This legislation encompasses that spirit,” Scott told reporters.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) who is actually a dick described the bill as a “token” but was most certainly referring to Scott being a token Republican who is an African American. “We cannot waste this historic moment,” Durbin said. “Let’s not do something that is a token, half-hearted approach.”

Scott took to the Senate floor to respond to Durbin. He also tweeted out “Y’all still wearing those kente cloths over there @SenatorDurbin?”

Durbin released a statement apologizing to Scott. “The minute Sen. Durbin heard that he had offended Sen. Scott, he sought him out on the floor and apologized. What Sen. Durbin took issue with in his floor speech was not Sen. Scott’s bill, but that the Senate Majority Leader would short circuit this critical debate and fail to make the changes needed to prevent the killing of Black Americans by police officers,” Durbin’s communications director, Emily Hampsten, said in a statement to Fox News.

Sure thing. No one believes you.

John Bolton’s burn book

John Bolton, drunk on vindication and bitterness, is desperately trying to get his nasty book out, making media appearances and leaking parts of his book. Bolton was fired by Trump and he is mad. During the impeachment hoax, Bolton came forward making unsubstantiated allegations about Trump and the Ukraine but didn’t want to testify because he wanted to sell books. Such a patriot!

Some of the crazier allegations floating around include that Trump asked China to help him win the election and promised to ignore human rights abuses and that Mike Pompeo and Mick Mulvaney orchestrated WH leaks. Now U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer who was at the meeting with where Trump allegedly asked Xi Jinping for election assistance, denies it ever happened. “Absolutely untrue, never happened. I was there, I have no recollection of that ever happening. I don’t believe it’s true, I don’t believe it ever happened,” Lighthizer testified during a Senate Finance Committee hearing.

The administration is currently suing Bolton from releasing his book because it hasn’t gone through the required vetting to make sure no classified information is included. This is standard procedure but apparently Bolton things he’s above the rules.
