The biological science magazine Nature recently released an op-ed apologizing for a previous article that documented the coronavirus’s origins in the city of Wuhan, China, according to Breitbart.
The magazine’s recent op-ed, titled “Stop the coronavirus stigma now,” declared that “we must do everything we can to avoid and reduce stigma; not associate COVID-19 with particular groups of people or places; and emphasize that viruses do not discriminate.”
The article further described efforts to tie the virus to its Chinese origins as “erroneous,” adding that the magazine’s own labeling of the virus as such was “an error on our part, for which we take responsibility and apologize.”
Breitbart noted that Nature magazine could suffer “economic losses” if it continued to refer to the Chinese origins of the virus, due to the publishing firm and universities relying heavily on “more than 700,000 Chinese undergraduate” students who are “studying at universities outside China.” Nature also made unsubstantiated claims that Chinese “students are hesitating to come back” to school “because of fears of continuing racism.”
