Senate passes bailout/stimulus bill
Following a contentions fight that involved Senate Democrats reversing an agreement with Republicans only to return to negotiate with progressive fantasy wishlist requirements, the Senate has finally voted and passed a $2T bill (the H.R. 748, the CARES Act) to help Americans and American businesses victimized by the federal government’s forced shutdown.
One major problem with the bill is “This bill pays you more not to work than if you were working,” Senator Lindsay Graham said, contending the bill would pay the unemployed roughly $24 per hour, on average. The bill would expand unemployment benefits to $600 a week for up to four months, in addition to state benefits. Pretty lucrative! Senators Lindsey Graham, Tim Scott, Ben Sasse and Rick Scott negotiated a vote on an amendment to cap the payout at a recipients current salary but the vote failed. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin opposed the fix. He’s a real punk and Democrat.
There’s also $25M for the Kennedy Center. “I’m a fan of that,” Trump said of the funding. “I haven’t spent time there because I’m far too busy. I’d love to go there evenings, but I’m too busy doing things.” NOPE.
Senators now will leave D.C until April 20.
The bill is in the hands of the House now. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) predicts the bill will get a voice vote on Friday. “In order to protect the safety of Members and staff and prevent further spread of COVID-19 through Members’ travel, the Republican Leader and I expect that the House vote on final passage will be done by voice vote,” Hoyer wrote. “Members who want to come to the House Floor to debate this bill will be able to do so.”
But AOC, the whackadoodle congresswoman from New York might force a floor vote.
On Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez told CNN she is not ruling out asking for a recorded vote, which would force lawmakers to return to Washington and vote in-person, something that most members of Congress are eager to avoid amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Ocasio-Cortez said she hadn’t seen the final bill text yet, “but I’m open” to asking for a recorded vote “if necessary.” Asked if she had concerns about forcing lawmakers to return, which would be an unpopular move, she said, “Of course.” But she added: “With the health risks of travel, there is no easy choice here. But essential workers are showing up and putting their health at risk every day, and if the final text of a bill is set up to hurt them, it may be something we have to do.”
A voice vote could delay the bill’s passage but let’s wait and determine what all the details of the bill are. It will be worth it to wait to make sure we don’t panic-ratify crazy new regulations and laws that benefit the institutional left and rape the taxpayers.
