Morning Greatness: Nevada Caucus Victor Bernie Sanders Praises ‘Literate’ Cuba

Bernie Sanders wins Nevada, praises Cuba on ’60 minutes’

Senator Bernie Sanders crushed his Democrat opponents in the Nevada caucus. With 88% of the precincts currently reporting, Sanders has 41% of the caucus vote while on the first round of voting he was at 47%. This suggest that caucus-goers who voted for candidates beneath the 15% threshold and had to recast their vote did not break for Sanders.

I can’t seem to find individual results for the specific caucus locations so if you are a Nevada voter and voted in the early primary rather than at the caucus on February 22, you don’t know exactly where your vote went since different caucuses probably had different initial results that would determine who needed to recast their vote.

Did everything go smoothly? We don’t know because Nevada Democrats asked caucus leaders to sign non-disclosure agreements. Shifty. Mayor Pete isn’t happy and his campaign sent a letter to the Nevada Democrats “alleging numerous errors in how early vote totals were folded into the Caucus Day process.” The Nevada Independent reports Mayor Pete’s campaign wants “the party to provide early vote and in-person vote totals by precinct, correct any early vote and second alignment errors identified by campaigns and explain other anomalies in the data before releasing any final caucus results.” I don’t think this is unreasonable because as I mentioned above, early voters don’t know where their vote went.

“Currently our data shows that this is a razor thin margin for second place in Nevada, and due to irregularities and a number of unresolved questions we have raised with the Nevada Democratic Party, it’s unclear what the final results will be,” Hari Sevugan, Buttigieg’s deputy campaign manager, said in a statement. Here’s more from the Independent:

Those issues, according to the campaign, include early vote data not being delivered or delivered after the caucus began, early votes not being used to calculate viability or the strength of each preference group, early votes being allocated to the wrong candidate and, in at least one case, early vote data from the wrong precinct being used.

Some early votes were “disregarded on second alignment,” while others were reallocated on second alignment despite their first preference being viable on the first alignment, the campaign says.

Other results include Biden (19.7%) in second place, Mayor Pete (17.1%) with a close third followed by Warren (11.2%), Steyer (4.7%) and Amy! (6.7%). Much hay was made about the unions opposing Bernie because his health care plan would eliminate the union health care benefit but the union opposition didn’t seem to hurt Bernie.

Fresh off his big Nevada win, Bernie appeared on “60 Minutes” offering what CNN calls a “partial defense” of Fidel Castro. “It’s unfair to simply say everything is bad” said Sanders. Okay.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but, you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” the Vermont senator told Cooper, responding to the clip. “You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?” Of course, because of those who were not killed or imprisoned, they have high literacy rates that can be used to read government approved literature.

“A lot of dissidents imprisoned in Cuba,” Cooper noted.

Meanwhile, the Democrat establishment is in “panic mode” Politico tells us. “In 30-plus years of politics, I’ve never seen this level of doom. I’ve never had a day with so many people texting, emailing, calling me with so much doom and gloom,” said Matt Bennett of the center-left group Third Way after Sanders’ win in Nevada.

“It’s this incredible sense that we’re hurtling to the abyss. I also think we could lose the House. And if we do, there would be absolutely no way to stop [Trump]. Today is the most depressed I’ve ever been in politics.”

They way I see it, the Democrats are in serious trouble. What are the options? If Bernie legitimately gets the most delegates before the convention and if the establishment adds some special sauce to their nomination recipe bestowing the nomination via the superdelegates to a more “suitable” candidate, there will be a sh!tstorm. The optics are awful and the Bernie people will start burning things down, literally. But if Bernie does get the nomination, the problem is that Bernie got the nomination. Not only is Bernie way to extreme for a large part of the Democrat party, he’s not going to appeal to independents and worse, he’s not controllable by the Democrat establishment.

Next up, the South Carolina primary on Saturday and the following Tuesday is Super Tuesday.
