A Democratic state lawmaker in Colorado has proposed a bill to officially replace the term “illegal alien” with “undocumented immigrant” on government documents and in other cases, according to USA Today.
The bill, HB20-1294, authored by Representative Susan Lontine (D-Colo.) and co-sponsored by Representative Julie Gonzales (D-Colo.), requires that “public contracts replace illegal alien with undocumented immigrant,” similar to laws already passed in California and New York.
Those who support such efforts, like Lontine and Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), claim that “illegal alien” is derogatory to illegal aliens. Castro introduced a similar bill to the floor of the House of Representatives last year, but it did not make it through committee.
