Morning Greatness: Welcome to the Impeachment Thunderdome

Good Wednesday morning.

Here is what’s on the president’s agenda:

  • The president participates in a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Iraq

Welcome to the Thunderdome

On Tuesday in a 13-hour torture session, the Senate determined what the rules would be for the made-for-tv impeachment trial. Senate Majority Leader Cocaine Mitch had rules set out but the Democrats wanted for force GOPers to go on the record by voting on amendments to subpoena various and sundry characters and documents. All were defeated as the GOP voted as a block for McConnell’s plan that the Senate would decide about witnesses and documents after hearing both sides make their cases. One exception: Susan Collins (R-Maine) voted with the Democrats on a measure that would extend the amount of time House impeachment managers and Trump’s legal team have to respond to motions. It still failed. At one point, Judge Obamacare Tax admonished the House Managers and the White House lawyers for their nasty rhetoric.

Both sides used their time to argue about the amendments to rage against each other. The House Democrats performed as expected: Trump intended to deny constitutionally allocated aide to Ukraine unless they opened an investigation into his political rival’s son and then obstructed Congress by asserting due process and executive privilege claims. Really, the Democrats are claiming that Trump is obstructing and covering up because he isn’t obeying their commands and asserting protections and rights afforded to every citizen in this country. The Democrats always clap trap about criminal justice reform and grandstand about a corrupt judicial system…unless they are the system.

The White House lawyers argued that the Democrats were criminalizing the executive branch’s authority. We all know the Democrats don’t really have a problem with executive power, they have a problem with Trump. If the Ukraine had to open and announce investigation into sleazy Hunter Biden, where were the investigations? Where was the announcement? Where were efforts to do as Trump demanded to get their aid?

I wonder what the ratings were for yesterday’s trial. Will people who were not persuaded by the much ballyhooed House clown show now come over to the Democrats way of thinking? I am not sure so but the purpose isn’t just about persuasion: the Democrats want to damage vulnerable GOP Senators and get some more witnesses so they can keep “hunting” for damning evidence against Trump. This isn’t about “protecting the constitution” it’s simply another political tactic to get rid of the president and amass more power. If there is one thing painfully obvious about the Democrats that Trump’s election has laid bare: Democrats will use their power to undermine the will of the people if it isn’t to their liking.
