The Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot has announced a North American Tour early next year to raise funds for Planned Parenthood. The 19-date tour is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles on March 13, 2020, and will run for just over a month, Fox News reports.
The tour will swing through Denver, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Detroit and Brooklyn. The final show will take place on April 14 in Phoenix. The band has ensured that $1 from each ticket will be allocated to each city’s local Planned Parenthood.
Pussy Riot’s connection to Planned Parenthood dates back to July when the group performed a concert in Birmingham, which was reportedly sold out, to protest anti-abortion legislation in the state. The band donated all the proceeds from the show to Planned Parenthood and the Yellowhammer Fund to support legal abortion.
The band, known for their feminist activism, gained global notoriety when five members of the group staged a protest performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on February 21, 2012. The group’s actions were condemned as sacreligious by the Orthodox clergy. In 2012, two of the group members, were arrested and charged with hooliganism. In 2016, two weeks before President Trump’s victory, Pussy Riot released “Make America Great Again”, depicting a world where a President Trump enforces his values through beatings, shaming, and branding by stormtroopers.
