Joy Reid, host of MSNBC’s “AM Joy,” apologized for using a photograph of white supremacist Richard B. Spencer during a segment on the recently-fired Secretary of the Navy, Richard V. Spencer, as Fox News reports.
The View co-host was talking about Secretary Spencer’s recent firing from the Trump Administration over his handling of the case of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. But during the segment, the image that was used to represent Spencer was instead the notorious white supremacist Richard Spencer, who has been a featured guest on CNN. Reid later issued an on-air correction for the mistake, which was repeated in a Tweet from the show’s account.
Spencer was forced out as Navy Secretary after it was revealed that he tried to circumvent Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to make a secret deal directly with the White House over Gallagher. The Navy SEAL was found not guilty of the alleged murder of an ISIS fighter earlier this year, and his sentence of demotion was overturned by President Trump, who demanded that Gallagher be allowed to keep his rank and retire as a SEAL.
When Esper discovered that Spencer had broken the chain of command, he fired Spencer. Spencer later wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post attacking President Trump.
