According to the Washington Examiner, several unnamed White House officials have confirmed that former FBI Director Robert Mueller was actively seeking a return to his old job prior to his appointment as Special Counsel.
This is in direct contradiction to Mueller’s sworn testimony before Congress on July 24th, when he responded to President Donald Trump’s then-recent criticisms that his investigation was fueled by bitterness at being passed up for the FBI position. Mueller said, under oath, that “My understanding was I was not applying for the job.”
The day of the testimony, President Trump tweeted that he “hoped” Mueller would not say such a thing under oath, as there were “numerous witnesses to the interview” in which Mueller asked for his old job back, “including the Vice President of the United States.”
Mueller’s Special Counsel investigation lasted for almost two years, and ultimately turned up no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 election, while also exonerating him of any possible “obstruction of justice” charges related to the investigation itself.
