Shortly after being sworn-in in January, freshman U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) promised to “impeach the motherfucker” during an inauguration celebration. The “motherfucker” to whom she was referring, of course, was President Donald Trump.
Tlaib’s outburst ushered in the profane, malevolent, and contemptible 115th Congress of the United States.
Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is under fire for his defiant performance during the House Judiciary Committee’s first impeachment hearing on Tuesday. Lawmakers and pundits are howling about Lewandowski’s refusal to answer questions and his mockery of the process. (Lewandowksi testified for more than 20 hours before the Senate and House Intelligence Committees and Robert Mueller’s office.)
Yet Jerold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the committee’s chairman, is reportedly considering whether to charge Lewandowski, who never actually worked for the Trump Administration, with contempt of Congress.
It is Nadler and his Democratic colleagues, however, who are defiling the halls of Congress.
Since taking control of the people’s house more than eight months ago, Democrats—individually and collectively—have acted contemptuously toward the president, his associates, his family, and his supporters. After failing to take down the president by means of fabricated Trump-Russia collusion, Democrats are leading dozens more investigations into Trump World.
Democratic House members have berated, threatened, and demeaned Trump Administration officials. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) screamed and cried during a February hearing with then-acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker about family separation policy. ““Do you know what kind of damage has been done to children and families who across this country, children who will never get to see their parents again?” she shrieked.
Shadow Speaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is on a nonstop crusade against border patrol agents while comparing detention facilities to Nazi concentration camps. In March, Ocasio-Cortez accused border agents of drugging, raping and abusing migrant children. This provoked outrage last week by the acting director of the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency, whom Ocasio-Cortez called “appalling” during a House Oversight Committee hearing. “In my 34 years I have never seen such hate toward law enforcement agency in my life,” fumed Tom Homan.
Anti-Semetic remarks by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) prompted the House to consider a resolution condemning anti-Semitism; the measure was watered down to include every kind of “ism” so as to not single out one of the party’s most visible newcomers. Omar later claimed the president was not a “human” and mocked Christians from the House floor.
Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has repeatedly lied to the public about various crimes committed by the president, his son, and his associates from his perch at the House Intelligence Committee.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Democratic lawmakers called Lewandowski, a private citizen, a “chicken,” the “Forrest Gump” of corruption, and a “hitman” among other insults. One Democrat compared him to a “fish being cleaned with a spoon.”
If Democrats want to charge anyone with contempt of Congress, they should look in the mirror. As Jim Carrey said in “Liar, Liar”: “I hold myself in contempt!”
