Required Reading – May 22 Evening Update

Required reading from around the web of the best, most interesting, or most though provoking things we’ve read:

Sullivan: The Answer to the Abortion Debate Has Existed in the Constitution All Along

“We should begin by stating the obvious:  Roe v. Wade was an errant ruling by the Supreme Court, and one which has rightfully earned ‘public opposition and academic criticism’ because  the ‘Court ventured too far in the change it ordered and presented an incomplete justification for its action.’

That’s not my framing of the mistake made in the Roe decision, mind you.  Those are the words of none other than Ruth Bader Ginsburg, uttered in 1985.  And as late as 2005, even she acknowledged that ‘in 1973, the law was changing.  Women were lobbying around that issue.  The Supreme Court stopped all that by deeming every law – even the most liberal – as unconstitutional.  That seemed to me not the way the courts generally work.’ Anyone who harbors an ounce of honesty must admit that these statements by the famously progressive justice are accurate.”

Brown: It’s Time for California Parents to Defy the Law

“As followers of Jesus, we are called to submit to the laws of the land and to honor those in authority. The New Testament is very clear on this (see especially Romans 13:1-7). It is also very clear that there are exceptions to this rule, namely, when the authorities require us to disobey the Lord (see Acts 5:40-42). In that case, with respect, we say, “We must obey God rather than man” (see Acts 4:18-20; 5:29; to be perfectly clear, I’m speaking of non-violent resistance to the law.) That time has come for parents in California. In good conscience, they must say NO to the school authorities and YES to the Lord. It’s time to declare to the schools of California, “Quit using our children as pawns in the culture wars! Quit sexualizing our kids!” I’m speaking about the radical new sex-ed curriculum being imposed on all students in the public schools, K-12, without exception, and without the option of parents removing their children from objectionable classes.”

Friedman: Brexit Party Takes Wide Lead in Wales, Second Place in Remain-Voting Scotland

“The Brexit Party has taken a massive 17-point lead over the pro-Remain Welsh nationalist party in Wales in a poll ahead of Thursday’s European Parliament elections. The YouGov poll published Monday revealed Nigel Farage’s party to have the support of 36 per cent of voters in the country, which voted to leave the European Union in June 2016. […]  The news comes as another YouGov poll puts the Brexit Party in second place in Scotland — an extraordinary position given that that country voted Remain by nearly two votes to one (62 per cent to 38 per cent).”
