A Democrat state legislator in Alabama has become famous overnight due to his truly disturbing comments defending abortion during a debate in the Alabama House of Representatives.
By an overwhelming 74–3 vote, the Alabama State House passed a pro-life bill this week that would ban all abortions and make abortion a felony.
Prior to the passage of a bill, Democratic state representative John Rogers of Birmingham, who claims to be Catholic, shared his thoughts on “a woman’s right to choose.”
“It ought to be a woman’s choice,” said Rogers, parroting the usual liberal argument in favor of abortion. “I’m not about to be a man and tell a woman what to do with her body. She has a right to make her decisions herself.”
Rogers then went off the rails somewhat. “Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later,” he said.
He went on to explain that some children may be aborted because they are “retarded” and “half-deformed.”
“Some parents can’t handle a child with problems,” he said. “It could be retarded. It might have no arms and no legs.”
He followed that up by saying, “I may bring a bill to force all men to have vasectomies. That would end this whole debate.”

Rogers doubled down on his comments in an interview with Al.com on Thursday, saying the state was “killing people every day in this state” by denying people food stamps and putting criminals in jail. “That’s what I’m saying. You kill me now, you kill me later anyway,” Rogers said.
The Al.com reporter pressed Rogers to clarify his remarks. “So you said they’re unwanted children, kill them now, it doesn’t matter, it’s the same thing as killing them later?” she asked.
“Right,” Rogers answered, continuing to justify his comments by citing the hardships people are facing in Alabama. “You close thirteen rural hospitals, and going through Medicare Expansion,” he said. “You got at least two people a night getting killed in our prisons, and then we keep locking them in prisons and building prisons — locking them up in prisons by the droves. So therefore, you kill them anyway. You denying them the right to get food stamps. You got to get drug tested to get food stamps–’cause you on drugs mean you starve to death!” Rogers exclaimed. “So therefore, you kill them anyways.”
Alabama Senate majority leader, Republican Greg Reed, issued a statement in response to Rogers’ comments. “Representative Rogers’ remarks are chilling,” Reed said. “‘Kill them now, or you kill them later’? His comments should be condemned at the state and national level.”
U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne, a Republican from Alabama, called the comments “one of the most horrific statements I’ve ever heard from an elected official.”
“[I]t follows the previous disgusting comments from Governor Northam in Virginia,” added Bradley, a candidate for the U.S. Senate. “The American people must put our foot down and say enough is enough. Every single life is precious and worth fighting for. I’m disappointed Alabama has a Senator in Doug Jones who is unabashedly pro-abortion and refuses to stand up to this type of extremism from members of his own party. Alabama deserves a 100% pro-life voice representing us in the Senate.”
Instead of focusing on the Democrat’s chilling comments on abortion, the Hill covered the story from the “Republicans Pounce” angle.

In 2018, Alabama voters have made their opposition to abortion on demand clear by passing a pro-life amendment, Alabama blog Yellow Hammer reported.
Amendment 2 reads:
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, as amended; to declare and otherwise affirm that it is the public policy of this state to recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, most importantly the right to life in all manners and measures appropriate and lawful; and to provide that the constitution of this state does not protect the right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.
It should come as no surprise that Alabama’s pro-life legislators would use this as an impetus to move further on the abortion issue and even move to ban it outright. President Donald Trump’s appointment of pro-life justices to the Supreme Court created an opportunity for pro-lifers to go after the Roe vs. Wade ruling once and for all.
Rep. Terri Collins (R-Decatur) proposed and passed the most restrictive pro-life bill you could pass. The bill has no exceptions for rape and incest, and it has the desire to directly challenge Roe vs. Wade. The bill passed 74-3, the margin was so large because most Democrats “took a walk” instead of voting no.
It was before this walkout that Rogers and another Democrat made outlandish remarks in opposition to the bill.
Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D-Birmingham) regaled her colleagues with a poem entitled, “If My Vagina was a Gun,” which tries to compare the gun’s rights debate to the abortion debate.
