Maybe Jeff Sessions Has Already Wrapped My Christmas Present

As we close out this unprecedented year of remarkable happenings, it’s a good time to reflect on what would be the best Christmas present for Americans on the Right.

One choice would be a constitutionalist replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy. That would definitely fit the bill though, realistically, it would have to wait at least until next year.

Likewise, funding for the border wall likely won’t come around until after the 2018 midterms and some boost in the number of Senate Republicans who actually believe in borders.

So, what might break loose in December that could have a massive positive impact on right-wing morale?

Well, how about eliminating the sabotage by entrenched Obama Administration moles at the Department of Justice? Sound like a fantasy? Not necessarily.

The Washington Post on December 2 revealed that two FBI investigators in Robert Mueller’s special counsel task force were taken off the investigation because of “highly charged” anti-Trump text messages they had exchanged while involved in an extra-marital affair. The two agents involved, former field director Peter Strzok and attorney Linda Page, were identified in an inspector general’s investigation into the FBI’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. No doubt the leak was timed to undermine an announcement in the works from Mueller’s office.

In response the Post story, the Justice Department put out the following press release:

. . . The January 2017 statement issued by the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (OIG) announcing its review of allegations regarding various actions of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in advance of the 2016 election stated that the OIG review would, among other things, consider whether certain underlying investigative decisions were based on improper considerations and that we also would include issues that might arise during the course of the review. The OIG has been reviewing allegations involving communications between certain individuals, and will report its findings regarding those allegations promptly upon completion of the review of them.

Got that? Needless to say, this combination of events and revelations has stirred up a lot of interest on the Right, with commentary ranging from “That’s interesting” to “Jeff Sessions has been playing ‘possum and is getting ready to lower the boom.” Only time will tell, of course. But it is truly startling. If the Justice Department’s inspector general has been investigating the FBI since January, then what else has he uncovered? And how will this end up affecting Mueller and his investigation of President Trump’s alleged collusion with the Russians?

Imagine a scenario in which revelations of compromised FBI personnel gave Sessions reason to force Mueller’s investigators to recuse the entire probe out of existence. Instead of chasing down ghosts in the Russia matter, wouldn’t it be a hoot if a special task force dug into how the FBI apparently has become so politically corrupt?

But even if the revelations fall short of causing Mueller to recuse himself, they may apply enough pressure to convince Mueller to moderate his approach to the investigation. And even if that doesn’t achieve the desired end, it could provide the basis for President Trump to put a halt to the special counsel’s mandate. He could say that enough doubt exists as to the objectivity of Mueller’s team based on these revelations to pull the plug on Mueller and replace him with someone less biased.

Of course, if all that comes out of this report is evidence that the FBI needs a thorough house-cleaning, that would be victory enough. Sessions is way behind schedule on draining that particular corner of the swamp. Giving President Trump the ammunition he needs to start firing back at his enemies is an enormous tactical advantage in the battle for the Justice Department.

So, in this festive season, it’s nice to take stock of all the blessings we’ve received this year:

  •    Appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
  •    U.S. exit from the Paris Climate Accord.
  •    Large reductions in illegal immigration.
  •    Restrictions and vetting of immigrants coming from dangerous Muslim countries.
  •    Restoration of some border controls.
  •    Cancellation of the Obama executive orders on carbon dioxide restrictions.
  •    Cancellation of the Obama executive order on coal mining.
  •    Cancellation of the Obama executive orders expanding national monuments in the Southwest.
  •    Imminent passage of tax reductions for individuals and corporations.
  •    Imminent passage of cancellation of Obamacare mandate.
  •    Immolation of many of President Trump’s Hollywood enemies in the #metoo scandals.
  •    Immolation of some of President Trump’s media adversaries in the #metoo scandals.
  •    Immolation of several of President Trump’s Democratic opponents in the #metoo scandals.
  •    Numerous demonstrations of President Trump’s hilarious ability to puncture media attacks with ruthless scorn and mockery.
  •    Successful diplomacy with China, Japan, and South Korea.
  •    Display of backbone in dealing with North Korea—something that’s been missing for decades.
  •    A first lady who doesn’t despise America.

For all these blessings I am truly grateful. But, please Santa, it’s almost Christmas. I’m only asking for one thing. All I want for Christmas is Mueller’s pink slip. Thanks, Santa. Ho, Ho, Ho. Merry Christmas.
